I am a RCA for the last 2 and a half years, and It seems as if I will never get a full time route. I am number 6 or 7 on the senority list in a fairly large office. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how long this is going to take? My wife and I are thinking of starting our family and the benefits sure would come in handy. I have inquired about switching to the city side as a carrier, but everyone i ask has a different answer. Last time I asked I was told that I won't be able to take the exam for 2 more years, when it is given to the public again. Any advice? Can I take an exam sooner somehow? Is there anyway I can get benefits now? THANKS!

Are you stuck as an RCA forever, not necessarily but in a large office and being 6 or 7 in the
seniority list unless there are a lot of retirements or other life events you could be an
RCA for a long time. My office was medium size
with 17 routes; Saw 4 of my RCA's converted
to RC within the 4 years I was there but some
of them had been an RCA for some years. Benefits, go into the RC web-site and I know the
Rural Carriers offer some kind of medical insurance but you will have to bear the full cost of it. Testing; go into the USPS Web-Site
it gives a list of all offices taking applications to take the test which is quite
different than the RC test and yes you must
take it when it is open to the public; evidently you have not taken it before. No you cannot be
reassigned from an RCA to a career position and you must have passed the proper examination. You can also call the 800 line and talk to someone as to finding out what tests besides the
Rural Carrier test they are giving around the
Area where you work. If someone is telling you
that it will be 2 years, that may be a guess as
unless they recently gave the test in your area.
Maybe things will change with RCA's but they have been this way for over 30 years causing
constant hiring of RCA's because now and days
a job without benefits is not as appealing as it
was at one time when those RCA positions were
targeted for people who just needed a part time
job and had someone else in the family providing
    the benefits.

I AM IN AN 11 ROUTE OFFICE. I WAS AN RCA FOR 5 YEARS, 2 MONTHS AND 15 DAYS. THE AVERAGE TIME IN MY OFFICE NOW IS 7-10 YEARS. I WORKED A LOT OF PART-TIME JOBS AND TOOK CASUAL POSITIONS 3 TIMES UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO LEARN A LOT OF ROUTES. I WAS ALWAYS WILLING TO WORK WHENEVER CALLED. HAVING BENEFITS WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE, BUT I AM GLAD I STUCK IT OUT. I LOVE BEING A RURAL CARRIER. IN MY OPINION, IT IS THE BEST JOB IN THE POSTAL SERVICE. GOOD LUCK.

Glad for you a lot of turnover if you cannot
stick it out and there is noone in the family
with benefits that covers you and the above post
wants to start a family; and yes the more routes
you know the better off you are and on purpose
I would leave a couple of RC Routes without an
RCA so my RCA's could work more hours; had 3 RCA's that new all the routes in my office and when I got there there were 14, when I retired
there were 18 and yes most RC's and RCA's love their jobs if they can stick it out.
